Axis Chemicals was a chemical plant in Gotham City, created by Tim Burton for his 1989 Batman movie. It was the place where Jack Napier was submerged into a vat of toxic chemicals, despite Batman's attempts to save him, and subsequently transformed into the villainous Joker in that particular continuity.

Later, it was the scene of Joker's master plan of lacing hygiene products with a deadly chemical known as "Smilex", which causes victims to laugh to death when combined with certain other ingredients, and Batman arrived to put a stop to it.

After realising that it was the only way to put an end to the scheme, the Dark Knight charged in to the plant in the Batmobile and destroyed it in a mass explosion, killing the large numbers of the Joker's henchmen who were present in there at the time.
