9 Worst Things Doctor Doom Has Done

2. He Invaded Wakanda

Doctor Doom invades Wakanda
Marvel Comics

Though the ficticious country of Latveria was commonly seen to have adopted an isolationist foreign policy (barring the export of Doom's own terror), things took a turn for the worse when Doom invaded Wakanda.

Taking place in 2010's Doomwar storyline, wherein the Wakandan government had been overthrown by a hostile force, it emerged that Doctor Doom was determined to take advantage of vibranium, the world's rarest resource that Wakanda just so happens to possess in abundance. T'Challa has to enlist the help of the X-Men to break the coup, but it still comes at a cost. Both T'Challa and Shuri end up fighting Wakanda's citizens to reclaim the throne from the Doom-orchestrated coup.

Doomwar - much like Mark Waid's Fantastic Four books - divulges more of Doom's motivations. His attempts to conquer the world are spurred on by his knowledge of the many apocalyptic futures waiting in the Marvel Universe's wings, and while that's no excuse for his invasion of Wakanda, it's all that Doom needs to pass Bast's test and receive the vibranium locked away in Wakanda's vaults.

T'Challa is then forced to deprive Wakanda's vibranium supply of its natural qualities in order to stop Doom's armour, and while the nation would eventually recover, Doom's imperialistic attempts to destabilise T'Challa's home rank among his gravest offences.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
