8. The Death Of Captain Stacy

Losing a parent is one of the worst things that can happen to a person, and that tragic event is something that Gwen Stacy got to experience first-hand.

The death of Captain George Stacy is still to this day one of the most impactful stories in Spider-Man mythos, and it is obviously one of the most emotional troubling things that Gwen has had to deal with. That death came in The Amazing Spider-Man #90, with Captain Stacy finding himself a spectator in a rooftop battle between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus.

As falling rubble puts a young boy in danger, the Captain pushes the boy to safety, but in the process loses his own life.

In a touching moment, as Spidey comforts George in his final moments, Captain Stacy reveals that he knew that Spider-Man and Peter Parker were one and the same, and he makes Peter promise to take care of Gwen.

Following the sad death of her father, Gwen resented Spider-Man - which in turn saw her butting heads with Peter, who would be more supportive of the Wall-crawler.

Struggling to deal with George's death, and at loggerheads with her boyfriend, Gwen decided to depart New York and move to London, only to find more trauma lying in wait.
