9 Worst Things That Ever Happened To Gwen Stacy

1. Her Affair With Norman Osborn

Gwen Stacy Sad
Marvel Comics

Much like Gwen's death cannot be ignored when compiling such a piece, so too is it near-impossible not to shine a spotlight on the 2004 revelation that Gwen Stacy had actually had an affair with Norman Osborn. And not just an affair, but this relationship led to Gwen secretly giving birth to twins shortly before her death.

From J. Michael Straczynski and Mike Deodato, this was part of the Sins Past arc where the present-day Spider-Man had his world turned upside down when the adult twins turned up under the belief that Peter Parker was their father.

As the story goes, Gwen had given birth to the twins - Gabriel and Sarah - in France, with the Osborn/Goblin blood in them causing the siblings to grow at an unnatural rate. After Gwen promises to keep the kids away from Norman and raise them with Peter, that turns out to be the final straw for Osborn - and it's explained how this played a part in the Green Goblin throwing Gwen off the George Washington Bridge soon after this.

Sins Past is a story that few look back at fondly, and it's a tale that not only shows some of the further horrors that Gwen Stacy had been through before her death, but it also felt a little 'WTF?!' when it comes to the fundamental characteristics of Gwen.

So poorly received was Sins Past and its fallout arcs, Straczynski himself later tried to get the events of comic retconned.
