As you know, the rest is pretty much history. The character's very existence came from Arleen Sorkin, who creators Timm and Dini saw on a soap opera episode flashback dressed in harlequin gear. You know where this is going.
Yes, it's true that Harley's first costume isn't very original. That's not what's so great about it though. It fit in very well in The Animated Series world of skintight getups. It's also the fact that when many people think of Harley Quinn, that red and black jester's uniform is what pops into their minds first.
This Harley outfit reminds a lot of us of our childhoods spent watching the cartoon, buying the figures, and reading the comics. Nostalgia almost always wins.
