6. James Gordon Jr.
DC ComicsAmong the many surprising character additions throughout the first collection of Eternal issues is that of James Gordon Jr., appearing at the tail end of Eternal #14. Scott Snyder has experience writing the quietly murderous Young James, mainly through his excellent Dick Grayson-as-Batman arc collected as The Black Mirror. Gordon Sr. being taken out of commission so early on was always a highly suspicious occurrence, and it will be interesting to see how James Jr. plays into that (if at all). There are already a lot of villains populating Eternal - including Blackfire, Professor Pyg, Carmine Falcone, The Penguin, etc. etc. - but James Jr. is just as likely to be a Big Bad in the world of Eternal. In many ways, James Jr. is the perfect foil for his father, a sentiment which is echoed in the subtle reflection in Gordon Sr.'s glasses in the illustration above. It will be interesting to see how both intelligent, devoted Gordons figure into the larger game afoot, and how Snyder and Co. provide a fresh take on a character that Snyder has already had success with.
