3. Bard Saves Batman
DC ComicsThe flip side of Forbes's shameful alliances is populated by the likes of Jason Bard, another lesser-known character that has nonetheless taken the spotlight in Eternal from the very first issue. Bard originally appeared in 1969 as a Gotham City cop with a war injury to his knee, and the character popped up every now and then during the 1970s and '80s. Bard's appearance in Eternal is his first in several decades, and he's certainly a different character than the war-torn Marine of the pre-Crisis comics. This Jason Bard is a young, idealistic cop from Detroit brought to Gotham by Jim Gordon himself, just before Gordon is incarcerated for the disastrous train incident. Bard sees the strength and honor in Gordon from their first meeting, and he seems loyal to him despite just having arrived in Gotham. While Forbes rigs a trap to catch Batman, Bard manages to allow the Dark Knight the smallest of windows for escape - which Batman takes - and in doing so jeopardises his standing with the Commissioner. This scenario sets Bard up to be a young Gordon of sorts, defying the "law" in favor of the "right", and it's exciting to imagine the possibilities of where Bard's character could go in the coming issues.
