Captain Marvel: 10 Comics Fans Must Read After Seeing The Film

2. When Walks The Mandroid

The Enemy Within
Marvel Comics

When Walks the Mandroid is a classic tale found in the pages of Captain Marvel #18. This was during the time that Captain Marvel was actually the Kree known as Mar-Vell, a more feminine version of whom was played by Annette Benning in the Captain Marvel film.

This was the story that started it all, the one that turned Carol Danvers into the woman who would one day take over the title of this book and become the new Captain Marvel. After she was captured by the villainous Yon-Rogg, it's up to Marvel to rescue her, but things don't go according to plan.

During the rescue attempt, Carol gets hit by a laser that knocks her out, but thanks to the Kree Psyche-Magnitron, her DNA is forever altered. She was granted superpowers and Kree DNA, which would eventually help her to become the new superhero, Ms. Marvel.

The issues relating to the Psyche-Magnetron would return several times over the years, but it all started here in this one book. The story was adapted into the origin used in the film, though the Psyche-Magnetron was replaced with a Tesseract-induced FTL Engine. The origin story of how Carol Danvers became a superhero is one of the most important in her entire library.
