Captain Marvel: 10 Comics Fans Must Read After Seeing The Film

3. This Woman, This Warrior

The Enemy Within
Marvel Comics

This Woman, This Warrior was the title of the story told in Ms. Marvel #1, as written by the legendary Chris Claremont and Jim Mooney with illustrations by Gerry Conway, John Buscema,‎ Sal Buscema,‎ & John Romita.

This was the first Carol Danvers comic to feature the character with the name Ms. Marvel, and it all kicks off in New York City. Danvers has taken a job editing a woman's magazine for Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson, but thanks to some nasty headaches and periods where she blackouts, she has a rough go of it in the beginning.

When the Scorpion rears his ugly head and goes after her new boss, it's off with the civvies and back into the fight as the new superhero, Ms. Marvel! The hero blasted into action in her first true Earthbound adventure but was still tied to her cosmic roots in this stunning tale.

Ms. Marvel #1 was published back in 1977, so it hit the shelves more than a decade after the character's debut. Even so, it was a new beginning for a character fans had come to know within a specific setting, and it would set the stage for all the changes and advancements that would be made to the character from that point forward.
