Yon-Rogg was the seasoned Commander of the Hellion, the ship that brought Mar-Vell to Earth, on a mission to find out how the "primitive species" was able to defeat a Kree Sentry.

He sent Mar-Vell down alone to investigate, in the hope he would be killed, as he harboured a deep hatred for the soldier and was jealous of the romantic attentions given to him by the ship's medic, Una.

Though they fought on the same side, in service to the Kree Empire, Yon-Rogg was eager to be rid of Mar-Vell, and was eager to enact Ronan the Accuser's order of executing him. His execution would, however, be thwarted by an unexpected attack from an enemy race. Since then, Yon-Rogg positioned himself as one of Mar-Vell's most prominent adversaries.

In one of their later clashes, Yon-Rogg would kidnap Carol Danvers, with the ensuing firefight resulting in both of them gaining cosmic power from the explosion of the Psyche-Magnitron.

Gaining the name Magnitron, he eventually battles Carol Danvers on Earth, using her memories to torment her with past enemies, attempting to drop a Kree city onto New York.
