Comic Review: Daredevil #8
If you’re not reading this book you are doing yourself an injustice as a comic book reader.
Its been a week since Amazing Spider-Man #677 started off The Devil and the Details crossover between Spider-Man & Daredevil. A mere seven days later we are presented with the second and final part of the crossover by Writer Mark Waid and thankfully the usual drop of quality found in recent crossover events is absent from this story.
After last issue, one of the elements I was most looking forward to and expecting to see was the flip in character perspective. Last issue we saw events through the eyes of Spider-Man and now is the time for Daredevil to take centre stage. Even if you havent read the first part in Amazing Spider-Man, Matt Murdocks smooth flowing monologues get across more than enough exposition to help old and new readers catch up on the situation without hammering you over the head with the plot. The dynamic between Daredevil and The Black Cat is an interesting one to behold (if a little rushed at times), especially by the issues end when the Cats true intentions are revealed.
One area thats thankfully expanded on is the importance of the Omegadrive that's currently in Murdocks possession, more and more emphasis is put on how dangerous this storage drive could be if it falls into the wrong hands. With the upcoming Omega Effect crossover between Spider-Man, Daredevil & Punisher in April Im glad we still have three plus months left to build up the importance of this story thread and let it develop.
Kano takes up art duties for this issue to a successful degree. As much of a shame it is to not see previous ASM artist Emma Rios return for part two of the story, Kanos art carries the distinctive style seen by current ongoing DD artists Marcos Martin & Paolo Rivera extremely well. This helps bring a feel of consistency to Waids Daredevil run and I would be more than happy to see Kano return to the creative team in the near future.
I havent been the biggest Marvel fan in recent years, however in the past few weeks thanks to books like Daredevil #8 and Amazing Spider-Man #677 Ive begun reading these stories again with anticipation and a high level of interest rather than simply out of routine. Mark Waid and the entire DD team continue to rejuvenate one of my favourite superheroes of all time, if youre not reading this book you are doing yourself an injustice as a comic book reader.
