Up until this point Flashpoint had remained an extremely engaging event book that somehow managed to constantly surprise. However, with this latest issue it starts to feel like its spinning its heels a bit and, as much as writer Geoff Johns tries, it finally feels like what it really is: a guided tour through an alternate DCU, with only the slightest of plots to hold all the disparate threads together. Andy Kuberts pencils are a little more inconsistent than the last three issues, with some odd panels that let the otherwise excellent pages down. In one wide panel, an extreme wide long-shot that views our heroes from afar, he barely bothers to draw detail, and we essentially get stick men versions of Batman, Flash and Cyborg. For an A-list artist, this should be unacceptable. Thats not to say there isnt plenty to enjoy with this issue. It seems to be racing towards its conclusion with plenty aplomb, as the heroes of the Flashpoint universe finally unite against the evil Emperor Aquaman and the deranged Wonder Woman. However, the plot point that Johns uses to bring them together, while perfectly acceptable, seems like something he could have done a lot sooner- it didnt need to take four whole issues to get to this point. Considering how important this issue is to future of the DC, its still a must read. It just doesnt have the excitement of previous issues. Having said, being the fan boy that I am, Im still eagerly awaiting the resolution- lets just hope it can be as bold as the earlier issues.
