Father's Day: 5 Superhero Dads And Their Kids

4. Odin/Thor

odin thor Though Thor, the God of Thunder, and his father Odin, the All-Father and Ruler of Asgard, haven€™t got the smoothest relationship, they do generally get along with one another. Thor for the most part, tends to disobey his father when it comes to matters of the heart €“ one of the earliest Thor storylines saw him falling for a nurse who looked after him, Jane Foster, and Thor refusing to return to Asgard to stay with Jane on Midgard (Earth). Odin and Thor have always been at loggerheads €“ back in the Silver Age, Odin decided to teach his son some humility by taking his memories and placing him in the body of a disabled human medical student, Donald Blake. On a holiday in Norway, Blake discovers Mjolnir (Thor€™s hammer) in a cave handily disguised as a walking stick. When he strikes it against a rock he becomes Thor! Thor's preoccupation with Midgard is a constant annoyance for Odin who, as punishment, has taken away Thor's powers on at least three occasions. Thor's acceptance of the sanctions, along with his willingness to atone for his transgressions, his continued noble intentions, and his bravery, eventually convince the All-Father to relent and restore Thor's original powers and identity. Odin€™s not such a bad egg though €“ when he killed King Laufey the Frost Giant, he adopted the King€™s son as his own. Then again the boy did grow up to become Loki€ Maybe the best Father/Son moment the two have is in the Fear Itself Marvel Event where Thor stands up to Odin when Odin decides to destroy Earth to save Asgard. Thor convinces his father to allow him to do battle with the Serpent in a final bid to save them all and Odin relents. Odin arms Thor with the armour and helmet he wore the last time he cast out the Serpent, and the Odinsword, Ragnarok. Despite this, Odin gives Thor a final chance to avoid the battle with the Serpent asking him if he is a god or a man. Thor responds that he is a man, the one Odin raised him to be. Thor €œdies€ in battle, saving the world. He€™s currently alive and well in Jason Aaron€™s Marvel NOW! Thor series, and also appears in the Avengers books. Best father/son moment? Fear Itself by Matt Fraction et al.
