Father's Day: 5 Superhero Dads And Their Kids

3. Bruce Wayne/Batman and Damian Wayne/Robin

bruce damian Bruce Wayne has been a father for nearly the entire time he€™s been around in comics. Despite losing his own parents at a young age (around 10, though the actual age changes depending on the writer), Bruce became a father first when he saw the tragic deaths of the Flying Graysons at Haly€™s Circus and decided to adopt the recently orphaned child of the Grayson couple, Dick. Dick Grayson became Bruce€™s first adopted son and the first Robin, his iconic sidekick, to his Batman. Dick became a bright light in Bruce€™s dark life, his exuberant personality contrasting with Bruce€™s more sombre attitude, and Dick has grown up to become his own superhero identity, Nightwing, even putting on the cowl when Bruce was sent back through time after Final Crisis to become the new Batman of Gotham. As Dick outgrew the Robin role, Batman recruited a new Robin €“ Jason Todd €“ who, after a troublesome few years was eventually murdered by the Joker (the character returned in 2005 as the villainous Red Hood). Tim Drake became the third Robin next, followed by Stephanie Brown as the fourth Robin. It wasn€™t until Grant Morrison began his epic Batman run in 2006 that Bruce discovered he had a biological son, Damian, with Talia Al-Ghul. Bruce and Talia had shared a brief romance, enabling Talia to take some of Bruce€™s DNA and grow a son in a lab. Damian was raised in the League of Assassins before eventually being sent to his father€™s care where he became the fifth Robin. Bruce and Alfred (Bruce€™s own surrogate father) together spent years trying to undo the vicious conditioning Damian had undergone, eventually tempering his attitude. However tragedy struck earlier this year when Damian, alongside Batman Incorporated, went up against his mother€™s evil organisation, Leviathan, and was struck down by the Heretic, an adult clone of Damian, and Bruce lost his son. Despite the loss, Bruce has shown that he was a great dad to Damian, undoing Talia€™s damaging parenting approach to humanise his son, making his premature death all the more painful for Bruce. Currently Bruce and what remains of Batman Inc. are headed for a showdown in the closing 2 issues of Batman Incorporated #12 and #13. Will Damian return like Jason Todd did? Lazarus pits do exist in Batman€™s world and Damian€™s grandfather is hundreds of years old so€ Best father/son moment? Batman and Son by Grant Morrison is a great place to start but I also highly recommend Batman Incorporated Volume 1 by Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham to see the pair in action as a great father/son team
