Frank Miller: Ranking His Comics From Worst To Best

8. The Life And Times Of Martha Washington In The Twenty-First Century (1990-2007)

First appearing in a four-issue series entitled Give Me Liberty, Martha Washington is another of Miller's heroines that hardly gets enough credit. Born into extreme poverty, Martha eventually becomes an integral player in the Second American Civil War. Dave Gibbons (the English artist most famous for drawing Alan Moore's Watchmen in 1986-87) provides a world for Martha to live and breathe in, to which from 1990 to 1998 Miller and Gibbons would produce three miniseries' and two one-shots starring Martha, finally reuniting in 2007 to write the final chapter and solidify the book as a markedly awesome run. Since collected into a gigantic omnibus titled The Life and Times of Martha Washington in the Twenty-First Century, the first series is still the best. Martha's journey into freedom-fighting is an epic one, but the humor and passion present at her origin are never fully recaptured. Give Me Liberty alone merits Martha a place among Miller's most memorable heroes.
