16. The Dark Knight Strikes Again (2001-02)

There was a time dear reader, when Frank Miller was awesome. Then, one day, he wasn't. That day may very well have been the day of the release of The Dark Knight Strikes Again, the highly-anticipated sequel to his seminal 1986 Batman tale The Dark Knight Returns. Strikes Again promised more an older Bruce, more Carrie Kelly, and Miller's valiant return to the DC Universe after being away since 1987's Batman: Year One (not counting Spawn/Batman). Strikes Again promised to exceed the epic scale of an epic predecessor - and it failed pretty spectacularly. Gone is the noble Batman of The Dark Knight Returns - Strikes Again presents the Caped Crusader as nothing short of a cranky old man in a hero outfit. Some cite The Dark Knight Strikes Again as the beginning of the end for Mr. Miller, as most of his work following Strikes Again has been plagued by similar problems. As far as the actual characterisation of Batman goes, there's one book that stands out above all others as a glaring example of Miller's Dark Ages...
