MCU: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Mephisto

9. Originally A Villain For The Silver Surfer

Marvel Mephisto
Marvel Comics

Despite his diabolical, Satanic leanings, Mephisto was initially introduced in the pages of The Silver Surfer.

The troubled, conflicted Surfer found himself the victim of a variety of temptations and illusions courtesy of his demonic foe. Stan Lee created the character very specifically to tempt the tortured soul Surfer and showcase his nobility when he inevitably overcomes Mephisto's antics. A stark break from the typically cosmic, sci-fi-oriented baddies the former Herald of Galactus typically butts heads with, he livened up the late '60s issues of the character's adventures.

In the years after, Mephisto was moved over to Thor and eventually Ghost Rider comics where he continued to sow misery and destruction. In the case of Thor, much like that of The Silver Surfer, the master manipulator was presented as being disgusted by his nobility and purity of spirit.

In more recent years, writer Jason Aaron has repackaged him as the long term nemesis of every generation of The Avengers. The reveal of there being a line-up of Avengers consistently over the last million years made way for one of the universe's original evil beings to slot in as an eternal foil for the team. Perhaps he'll find his way back to the Surfer in a lead villain capacity again one of these days.
