Predicting Marvel's New Guardians Of The Galaxy
1. Star-Lord
Drax, Gamora, Mantis and Rocket definitely won't be present in the new team, considering they're not amongst the possibilities. Without those (and Rocket especially) it makes sense to have no Groot either, when those two are a bit of a package deal. While the writers clearly want to establish their team as different from the MCU Guardians, the huge popularity of James Gunn's two movies means they'll want the comic line-up to have some synergy with the MCU.
That's why Star-Lord should stay. As the leader of the crew, he not only offers a link between the old guard and the new, he connects fans minds between the movie Guardians and their comic book counterparts. Those are important factors, but it shouldn't be discounted that the main reason Star-Lord is such a valuable part of the team is just that he's a great character.
His dry wit would bounce well off any of the ten other candidates, and his dual wielding pistol style fits fantastically well with the Western motif the Guardians ape.
Any six of the eleven teased would make a brilliant Guardians Of The Galaxy, but for many fans, it just wouldn't be the same without Peter Quill.
