SDCC 2017: 8 Reasons Why DC Just Beat Marvel

1. They're Setting Out To Save The Industry

Although the above statement may sound a tad melodramatic, or indeed just plain nonsensical, there was a clear and guiding principle at work with DC this weekend, made apparent by Dan DiDio himself on Thursday.

"We have got to stop. We can't afford this to be a dying business," DiDio said. A sentiment that was also echoed by Lee; "We have to stop the collapse of the comic book industry."

There was a clear acknowledgement here from two of the most influential figures in the medium that previous policies of price inflation, variant covers and more had actively harmed industry sales. Central to DC's newfound strategy is a resolve to not let that happen, and indeed, to attack the problem with a renewed optimism for the future.

Everything about the publisher's presence at SDCC felt like one, long, laborious love letter to the medium - one that was spearheaded by the buzz of writers and artists on social media, and exemplified in full by the spectacle of the Justice League in Hall H.

Whatever your thoughts on what comic con is or used to be, it's clear that DC want you to be invested in their stories. They want to inspire readers old and new, and they want to do it all with a big fat smile on their face.

And honestly, who could pass up the opportunity to let them?

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
