Star Wars: 10 Expanded Universe Comics Every Fan Must Read

Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca's Darth Vader is Marvel's greatest Star Wars comic, and the one fans of the films cannot afford to miss.

Mirroring the main Star Wars series, Darth Vader takes place after the Battle of Yavin and sees Vader attempting to pick up the pieces left by the Death Star's destruction. The Emperor is losing confidence in his pupil, and he's determined to track those who destroyed the Battle Station across the galaxy. He does this by enlisting the help of the aforementioned Aphra, and it's in these two characters that the book finds its heart.

Yes, Vader might be more machine than man, but Gillen and Larroca are able to do something uniquely brilliant with the character, and that is to marry the emotive aspects of Anakin with the soulless nature of Vader. The Vader of these books is a true horror villain and bears all the ruthlessness of the version seen in Rogue One, and yet there's still just a little bit of the younger Skywalker in there too.

You can read the entirety of Gillen and Larroca's series in two hardcovers, which also collects the entirety of the Vader Down crossover with the main Star Wars book. It's absolutely genius, and if you ever wanted to see Vader's reaction when he discovered the identity of the pilot who blew up the Death Star, it's one you won't want to miss.
