The Wicked + The Divine - 10 Most Shocking Twists
7. Baphomet Is Nergal (Issue 20)
On first impression, Baphomet, all chains, six packs and leather, seemed like a bit of an idiot. This wasn't helped by his impulsive and brash personality (and certainly not by his attempt to kill Urdr and Inanna in order to increase his own lifespan), but over the course of the comics, the character has shown increased amounts of character depth and (awful puns aside) has become quite sympathetic.
Underneath his dashingly demonic exterior is a geeky young man named Cameron who is overcome with terror at his divine mortality (being a god means you only get two years to live), something which it turns out he had forced upon him by The Morrigan.
Throughout the comic, characters such as Cassandra have questioned the validity of Baphomet’s godhood. This was because the “real” Baphomet was not, in fact, a god, but rather an idol associated with the occult and, more recently, devil worship. This ties in nicely with the characters secret insecurities, as issue 20 reveals that Baphomet was actually a Mesopotamian underworld god known as Nergal.
Whilst this was just a small (if incredibly clever) twist, it set an early precedent that the gods may not be who they say they are, something which would become a recurring theme in WicDiv.
