The Wicked + The Divine - 10 Most Shocking Twists
6. Woden’s True Identity (Issue 33)
Woden is one of WicDiv’s least likeable characters; he’s abusive, misogynistic and for much of the comic seems to be Ananke’s right-hand man. Unlike the other gods, Woden seemingly has no powers of his own, explaining his bitter personality to some extent.
The Daft Punk inspired helmet the character wears at all times was assumed to hide his disfigured face (from a failed attempt to give himself powers) however the bombshell of issue 33 showed that fans (and the other gods) had well and truly had the wool pulled over their eyes.
Woden is actually David Blake - a minor character who Laura had had previous run-ins with - but this wasn’t the biggest secret Woden was hiding. In fact, he wasn’t actually a god at all, and it was his son Jon (the god Mimir) who had divine powers, and who Woden had kept prisoner whilst taking credit for his miracles.
It turned out that Ananke had struck a deal with Woden to use his son’s powers for her own gain in return for her not sacrificing him when the time comes. Woden had always seemed sleazy, but no one could have predicted just how messed up the character really was. He may simply have been trying to protect his son, but there were certainly better ways he could have gone about it.
