3. Wolverine: Enemy of the State
Writer: Mark Millar Artist: John Romita Jr
Mark Millar teamed up with his Kick Ass artist John Romita Jr to write a massive 12 part Wolverine series that reads like a blockbuster film. In Enemy of the State, Wolverine is brainwashed by HYDRA (a Nazi-esque organisation) into hunting down the Marvel superheroes to assassinate them. Wolverine takes on the Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Elektra, and the X-Men in a series of exciting action sequences that see him breaking into the Triskelion and the Westchester Mansion displaying just how deadly he can be. He causes some serious damage for our heroes (adding a superhero name to his list of kills) before he overcomes the mental conditioning and goes after HYDRA for revenge. The villain of the piece is Gorgon, a brilliantly scary dude whos a psychotic samurai and damn near un-killable. The book features lots of great action, an exciting storyline, and Wolverine at his bloody best. Also included (if you get the complete collected series edition, which I do recommend) is an issue set in WW2 where Logan is a POW in a Nazi concentration camp. The Nazis torture him again and again and again for days, weeks, months, driving his captors insane with his ability to regenerate from their most sadistic attempts at extracting information from him. The whole comic Logan doesnt say one word. Pitch black storytelling but brilliant nonetheless. Wolverine: Enemy of the State is big superhero comics done well by Millar and JRJR.
