2. Old Man Logan
Writer: Mark Millar Artist: Steve McNiven
Mark Millar based Old Man Logan on Clint Eastwoods Unforgiven where a worn-out old Wolverine forsakes violence, chooses to lead a quiet life and gives up being a superhero. That in itself should be enough to send you running to pick up this title Wolverine does Eastwood? Alright! Set in a dystopian future America where most of the superheroes have been killed and the remaining have become villains or gone into hiding, America has been divided up into four fiefdoms, each section ruled by a villain. In Logans case, his landlord is the Banner family, descended from Bruce Banner who decided to abandon heroism for the easier, more lucrative life. His green-neck family demand the rent from Logan and, when he cant pay it, he accepts a dangerous courier job with an elderly Hawkeye in exchange for the much needed cash. The road trip takes them across a Mad Max-esque landscape and a non-stop action-fest as Logans peaceful vow is pushed to the limit but what made him forsake the Wolverine name and violence in the first place? This is a What If? storyline thats really fun even if its not canon. Millar keeps the story moving at a riotous clip while frequent collaborator Steve McNiven (Civil War, Nemesis) makes the book look utterly gorgeous. Its Millar/McNiven so expect a lot of excessive, graphic violence, but otherwise Logan is humanised in a way thats rarely seen in his books. Absolutely great fun, Old Man Logan is one of the best Wolverine storylines ever written and one of Millars best works.
