The Wolverine: 5 Essential Books You Must Read

2. Old Man Logan

Writer: Mark Millar Artist: Steve McNiven oldmanlogan Mark Millar based Old Man Logan on Clint Eastwood€™s Unforgiven where a worn-out old Wolverine forsakes violence, chooses to lead a quiet life and gives up being a superhero. That in itself should be enough to send you running to pick up this title €“ Wolverine does Eastwood? Alright! Set in a dystopian future America where most of the superheroes have been killed and the remaining have become villains or gone into hiding, America has been divided up into four fiefdoms, each section ruled by a villain. In Logan€™s case, his landlord is the Banner family, descended from Bruce Banner who decided to abandon heroism for the easier, more lucrative life. His €œgreen-neck€ family demand the rent from Logan and, when he can€™t pay it, he accepts a dangerous courier job with an elderly Hawkeye in exchange for the much needed cash. The road trip takes them across a Mad Max-esque landscape and a non-stop action-fest as Logan€™s peaceful vow is pushed to the limit €“ but what made him forsake the Wolverine name and violence in the first place? This is a What If? storyline that€™s really fun even if it€™s not canon. Millar keeps the story moving at a riotous clip while frequent collaborator Steve McNiven (Civil War, Nemesis) makes the book look utterly gorgeous. It€™s Millar/McNiven so expect a lot of excessive, graphic violence, but otherwise Logan is humanised in a way that€™s rarely seen in his books. Absolutely great fun, Old Man Logan is one of the best Wolverine storylines ever written and one of Millar€™s best works.
