The Walking Dead: 10 Highly Anticipated Moments We'll See In Future Seasons

6. Rick Chopping Off Jessie's Hand

By far, one of the most exciting moments in the comic series is when the massive herd of walkers crash through the fences of Alexandria and the mayhem ensues. Trapped in a house with Carl, Jessie (Rick's brief first love interest), and her son Ron, Rick decides to make a break before it's too late. Things do not go as planned when Ron, even with the zombie-gut camouflage, panics and promptly begins to get eaten. Jessie, in shock, won't let go of his hand, or Carl's hand, and as the walkers close in to finish them all off, Rick does the only thing that he can: he chops Jessie's hand off with an axe, freeing Carl and sprinting out of the swarm of walkers. It is a brash decision and one that carries significant mental weight for Rick in the future, but it defines him as the story progresses. When Jessie asked him how he could consider leaving when there were many other families still trapped by the herd, he told her it was simple: because they are not our children. This is Rick. A man who keeps himself alive, keeps hope alive, for the sake and safety of his son. The show has instilled this sense of Rick during the long (some would say repetitive) conversations with Hershel about the importance of family in the new world. More, we have already seen Rick do unspeakable acts in the service of Carl and his comrades so if and when this scenario occurs, those character seeds will have been planted and there will be no question of his intentions. This moment is something we could expect to see at the mid-point of season seven and sets up the introduction of a character further down this list who brings with him a baseball bat and a fair share of difficulties.
