Before Identity Crisis, Doctor Light was always portrayed as something of a joke character. Primarily a foe to the Teen Titans, Light eventually volunteered his services to the Suicide Squad - only for it all to end in tragedy.
Light's time with Task Force X lent itself well to the character's own irreverent stylings, up until he attempts to save the Squad from an ill-fated run-in with the New Gods. He charges up, only to be cut to shreds by Darkseid's parademons, leading to Light actually fighting through the afterlife to get back to his teammates.
Somewhat tragically, given the Squad really isn't in the business of turning members down, Light's application to once again link up with the team is rejected by Amanda Waller. Ouch.
