First Appearance As Spider-Man: Dark Avengers #1

When fans think of Mac Gargan, their first thought is unlikely to be of the character masquerading as Spider-Man. The villain's first appearance came all the way back in the sixties as the original Scorpion, an antagonist sponsored by J. Jonah Jameson to take down the webbed menace, and it was a role he filled for some time, until Eddie Brock parted ways with Venom in the early aughts.

Come 2005, Gargan was now the new Venom. During this period he was every bit as sinister as Brock was during his early years with the symbiote, perhaps even more sadistic in places. He was used by the Pro-Registration forces during Civil War as a part of the Thunderbolts, but it was only when Dark Reign came around that Gargan used his old foe's namesake.

With Norman Osborn in complete control of S.H.I.E.L.D. (now renamed H.A.M.M.E.R.), the former Spidey adversary created a whole new version of the Avengers. The former Green Goblin became the team's new Iron Man (Iron Patriot), while Logan's son Daken became the new Wolverine. Gargan, meanwhile, was given medication to reduce Venom's size back to how it was when it first bonded with Peter Parker, effectively ensuring the public believed that this Spider-Man was the real deal.

It wouldn't last for long of course. Gargan loses the symbiote during the events of Siege, and reverts back to his old identity of Scorpion, which he's stuck with ever since.
