Batman: Knightfall
In the first of the "Greatest Hits" stories, we have Knightfall. We have one of the most open to casual fans. This epic explores iconic locations, characters and feuds of the DCU. We also have the best depiction of Bane, complete with origin tale and ominous presence. That concludes with Bane literally breaking Batman..and Wayne stays down. This huge arc was spread out over the course of a year, and told across the entire Batman comic canon. Knightfall concluded with the epic Batman vs. Batman brawl, as Bruce fought against the crazed Knight of Dumas, Azrael to reclaim the cowl. For the first time, readers were given the chance to see a badly beaten Batman, as the underdog and then broken. We gain an insight into his father-son relationship with Dick Grayson (Nightwing), a series of panels that show him retraining and re-evaluating his life. All that build toward his subsequent fight for survival and a return to order as a more determined Dark Knight. Beyond the back-breaking gimmick, readers will be treated to a parade of Batman's best villains.
