X-Men: 10 Worst Things The Mutants Have Done

7. '60s Professor X Being Shady

X Men Deadly Genesis
Marvel Comics

One of the most iconic things Kitty Pryde ever said was the line, "Professor Xavier is a jerk!" Though it was meant to reflect on her immaturity, Charles Xavier was, in fact, a jerk, especially during the early years of the X-Men.

In the 1960s, Professor X was portrayed as a manipulative man who didn't mind using his powers to achieve his goals, such as wiping the memories of villains like the Vanisher. He would even pretend to lose his powers and intelligence all in a ploy to teach his students how to become independent. And when he wasn't busy emotionally scarring teenagers, Charles would leave them alone from time to time and give leadership to a teenaged Scott Summers.

But if there's one thing fans won't forgive '60s Xavier for, it would be for his 'crush' on an underaged Jean Grey. In one of the comic's earlier issues, Charles' thoughts reveal that he is in love with his student but cannot do so as the leader of the X-Men and his disability, not the fact that he is way older than her. Not exactly the student-teacher relationship readers want to see.
