Rumour has it that Game Of Thrones’ Maisie Williams may already have been cast as Wolfsbane, a perfect choice that bodes pretty well for the rest of the film.

Rahne Sinclair began life as an orphan in Scotland, having the fear of God beaten into her daily by her guardian, a half-mad fundamentalist reverend. Convinced that she’s cursed and unholy, she’s rescued and adopted by Moira MacTaggert, who later sends her to America to be taught at Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters.

The second youngest of the New Mutants, Rahne is shy and repressed from a young age, but also an innocent, despite the violence implicit in her mutation. You see, Rahne is a werewolf, a mutant lycanthrope capable of transforming from a slight, scared red-headed girl into a full grown red wolf, or a form some way between the two.

In her lupine form, all the emotion that Rahne represses in human form comes out, as does her latent aggression and the confidence that comes along with that. As a survivor of abuse, Rahne has the strongest sense of right and wrong of anyone in the New Mutants, and a degree of empathy and compassion that other longstanding members of the X-family often lack.

A lot of terrible things continue to happen to Wolfsbane over the course of her time in the New Mutants: she loses two of her closest friends in Cypher and Warlock, and is nearly enslaved by the fascist anti-mutant regime in Genosha, deciding to leave the team shortly before they rebrand as X-Force.

Regardless of the trauma she endures and the continuing disconnection she feels between herself and her werewolf form, Rahne Sinclair remains the most important member of the New Mutants for many fans: she’s the heart and soul of the team and its fiercest fighter.
