2. Cannonball

The team’s field leader for pretty much the entire of the New Mutants’ run, Sam Guthrie is the team’s equivalent to Cyclops: responsible, mature and honest as the day is long, he’s the product of a salt-of-the-earth upbringing in rural Kentucky, the eldest of ten children in his family.
Cannonball’s power allows him to fly at fantastic speeds, creating a thermo-chemical thrust behind him which, as an adult, he was able to redirect as an offensive ability. A by-product of his ‘blasting’ flight is the manifestation of a virtually impenetrable forcefield that protects him and anybody he’s carrying, which allows him to become a human battering ram.
That makes him one of the more powerful teenagers affiliated with the X-Men, but there’s more to it than that. It’s very likely that Sam Guthrie, mild-mannered southern kid and all-round good egg, is a part of a mutant subspecies that may or may not express immortality in addition to their other powers.
Along with Rahne Sinclair, Cannonball is the glue that holds the New Mutants together, and Roberto ‘Sunspot’ da Costa’s best friend. Growing up to be considered one of the more vital cogs in the Marvel machine, Cannonball is chosen by Captain America to join the Avengers.
