10 2017 Horror Movies To Sate Your Bloodlust Until Halloween
6. The Mummy
Set to kick off the 'Dark Universe', this year's reboot of The Mummy is the first in a series of connected Universal monster movies; expect Dracula, The Invisible Man, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man and many other movies to bombard your screens over the next few years.
The Mummy centres around an ancient Egyptian princess, Ahmanet (played by Sofia Boutella), with not only deadly, terrifying powers, but a tenacious grudge to match. Naturally, the only person in the world who can stop her from tearing it to pieces is Tom Cruise. Duh.
Doubling down on the 'connected universe' aspects of the film from the outset, the film will also feature Russell Crowe as Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde, and judging by the trailer the film seems to be attempting to balance the classic horror of the original Mummy movie and the high-octane action of the Brendan Fraser-starring reboot. Let's face it though, it still looks like more of an action movie than a horror.
While the focus on action makes sense on many levels (it's hard to imagine a Dracula/Frankenstein team-up movie that's straight horror), it could also prove to turn off the genre fans they should really be trying to appeal to. Nevertheless, this is an interesting direction for a beloved franchise, and I'm excited to see how it turns out.
