10 2017 Horror Movies To Sate Your Bloodlust Until Halloween
7. The Dark Tower
To many horror fans, The Dark Tower needs no introduction. Based on Stephen King's long-running series of novels (which King refers to as his magnum opus), The Dark Tower has undergone several failed adaptation attempts, and has now landed safely in the arms of Danish writer-director Nikolaj Arcel, who previously wrote the script for 2009's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The project has been heavily anticipated by fans of King for many years, and is finally hitting screens in the UK on 28th July 2017.
With a deceptively simple premise, The Dark Tower series follows a gunslinger - played in the movie by Idris Elba - as he searches for the eponymous tower, coming face-to-face with many obstacles along the way. The story soon becomes complex however, as it incorporates elements of horror, science-fiction, fantasy and western material. The story is very meta, taking place in a multiverse of Stephen King's novels, bringing interesting concepts into play that were introduced in other stories.
It's incredibly ambitious - and incredibly risky; and that's before even mentioning the fact that the movie is also supposed to lead into a TV series. While this business model may seem peculiar, it actually might end up working in The Dark Tower's favour - after all a story this dense with character, concept, plot and mystery probably won't be done justice by a series of 2 hour movies; the reason the similarly dense Game of Thrones series was made for TV rather than film.
