5. Julia Roberts - After the Hunt
It's been too damn long since Julia Roberts has had a truly substantial leading role in a major movie directed by a respected auteur filmmaker, and so she looks like she's going to have an absolute feast in Luca Guadagnino's new buzzed-about drama After the Hunt.
Roberts plays Alma Olsson, a respected Ivy League college professor who faces a crossroads when her protege (Ayo Edebiri) accuses a colleague (Andrew Garfield) of sexual assault, bringing Alma's own dark past to the fore.
Few actors can play fiery and authoritative as well as Roberts, and so this role looks like it was basically lab-made for her - a fact seemingly confirmed by what we see of her work in the film's trailer.
And if there's still any further doubt, early test screening reports have called Roberts "incredible" in the role, so short of a disaster she's likely to be a serious contender for next year's Best Actress Oscar and could even win the gong outright.
