Just like Babygirl, Steven Soderbergh's new film Presence suffered considerable audience backlash due to dishonest marketing which misrepresented what it actually is, despite scoring a cool 88% from critics.

From the trailer, you'd assume that this experimental effort - which takes place entirely from the perspective of a ghost - was a card-carrying horror flick.

The posters and trailers emphasised every sliver of even vaguely creepy imagery, even though the reality is that Presence is actually more of a familial drama with fringe thriller elements.

Most of the film focuses on a splintered family simply being observed by the entity, and even when the intensity ramps up later on, it's a stretch to call it horror at all.

And so, it's little surprise that Presence's audience score is barely half that of the critical rating - a middling 54% - while it landed a "C+" CinemaScore.

Audiences who were banking on a spooky haunted house movie instead got a far more pared down supernatural drama that was mostly lacking the expected genre elements.

Presence is a good movie well worth checking out - just know what you're getting into before you sit down to watch it.
