Ethan Hawke seems to be leading two separate careers simultaneously; on one hand there is the Academy Award-nominated actor and writer that has appeared in critically-acclaimed features like Gattaca, Before The Devil Knows You're Dead, Training Day, Boyhood and Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight, while on the other hand there is the star of an increasing number of fairly terrible genre movies. It seems to be that the actor signs on for these projects solely to pay the bills, which leaves him free to pursue his other interests in independent movies and the theater. How else could you explain a filmography that sees awards favorites Before Midnight and Boyhood sandwiched in between Getaway, an awful action thriller co-starring Selena Gomez that currently holds a rating of 2% on Rotten Tomatoes? In opting to take a percentage of the gross instead of a salary for starring in The Purge, Hawke made a lot of money when the movie earned almost $90m at the box office against a $3m budget. With the likes of the Assault On Precinct 13 remake, Daybreakers, Sinister and Predestination also under his belt, the 44 year-old seems to be appearing in more and more of these forgettable movies as his 30 year career goes on.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
