10 Actors Who Broke Typecasting In The Worst Way Possible
3. Rebel Wilson - Bachelorette
Her Typecasting:
Thanks to her breakout role in the Pitch Perfect Franchise, Rebel Wilson managed to hit the big time by playing the unfortunate stereotype: "funny fat friend". When the first movie came out and Rebel garnered overnight fame for her character Fat Amy, humour based on weight was still considered to be funny. She went on to reprise this role to mind-numbing effect in the two lazy sequels, and found herself trapped in the ridiculous stereotype.
How She Broke It:
Instead of playing the wacky side character, Wilson took the straight-woman role in the gross out comedy movie Bachelorette; a movie clearly trying to capitalise off of Bridesmaids' success. The role was supposed to prove she could be more than the funny fat girl, and hopefully be a launchpad into a career of a leading lady.
What Went Wrong:
Her role as the straight-woman was boring and forgettable, her character Becky was surrounded by women that were more interesting and had more depth than her, even though she was the one aiming to prove her abilities as a layered actor. Without her signature crazy and brash behaviour, Wilson faded into the background, and considering none of the other character's were very likeable, this did not bode well for her.
Plus, her character was constantly ridiculed for her weight by other characters, which is considerably worse than playing a character that fat-shames themselves.
