10 Actors Who Broke Typecasting In The Worst Way Possible
2. Vince Vaughn - Psycho Remake
His Typecasting:
Vince Vaughn is your gentle giant comedy buffoon. In the nicest way possible. In his comedy movies, Vaughn is always in on the joke. The joke being his height, his intelligence, his gentle giant nature etc. His beloved characters are self deprecating and hilarious, and you really have to be quite stone faced to not laugh at his whole schtick.
How He Broke It:
Early on in his career, perhaps to try and halt the inevitability of his typecasting, Vaughn took the role as the infamous movie villain Norman Bates in the Psycho remake. It should have been a smart choice; Bates is the complete polar opposite to Vaughn's more playful roles.
What Went Wrong:
Unfortunately for Vaughn, the eventual ridicule that the movie garnered turned Vaughn into more of a buffoon than he'd ever been perceived as up until that point. Everybody involved in the movie became jokes in the industry, especially Vaughn as his performance as the creepy caretaker Bates proved uncomfortable in a way that was definitely unintended. His nervous laughter felt calculated instead of compulsive, the inclusion of the masturbation scene made the character vulgar rather than unhinged and his line delivery could not hold a candle to the work of Anthony Perkins.
