10 Actors Who Could Be The Breakout Stars Of 2018
2. Tye Sheridan
You Know Him From:
Promising much with strong performances as a young teen in deep south dramas Mud and Joe, managing to hold his own opposite Matthew McConaughey and Nicolas Cage respectively. Those performances won him a largely superfluous role as a much more angsty than in the original series Scott Summers/Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse.
In 2018:
A presumably more central role in the plot of Apocalypse sequel X-Men: Dark Phoenix awaits, given the titular Phoenix is Scott's girlfriend Jean. (Although his predecessor in the role, James Marsden, did not last long in Fox's previous attempt at the Dark Phoenix saga).
Writer-director Simon Kinberg has described the Scott-Jean relationship as "the emotional core of the movie" and has stated that the story will involve Scott having to step up into his traditional leadership role within the group, thereby suggesting some much more meaty material for Sheridan to play with than he was given in Apocalypse.
Perhaps more significantly, Sheridan has also got the lead role in this summer's big Steven Spielberg virtual reality themed nostalgia-fest Ready Player One.
There have been some mixed responses to Ernest Cline's original novel but its enormous mass of pop cultural reference points from the 80s and 90s sets it up perfectly to appeal to an audience that lapped up Stranger Things' lavish devotion to the early films of Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment. It could be also the movie in which Sheridan's childhood promise is turned into real movie stardom.
