10 Actors Who Could Play The Joker In Matt Reeves' Batman
6. Jake Gyllenhaal
Nightcrawler.
That's pretty much my entire pitch for him getting the part, just his performance in Nightcrawler. Specifically, a Bruce Wayne-style Joker where he has a normal alter ego who nobody suspects is, in fact, the notorious man behind the mask (or, in this case, clown paint). Nightcrawler. Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler.
Every single element of his performance in that movie is categorically perfect for an adaption of the Joker. From the way he talks, the physical performance and the way he used his whole body for the delivery, even down to his facial mannerisms, ticks, and twitches. All of it. Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler.
The way he flips between being a man who is in control with a frenzied rage bubbling underneath the surface, to a man who has lost all restraint but still has purpose and direction in his rage, is the one variation on the character we're still yet to see. A version who, rather than a singularly maniacal crime lord, could be any one of us, is a fresh new direction and one Gyllenhaal would excel in. Jake Gyllenhaal, that is. Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler.
