10 Actors Who Hated Working Together

3. Bette Davis & Joan Crawford - What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?

In the case of Robert Aldrich's legendary 1962 psychological horror film What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?, the hatred of its two lead actors was precisely the impetus for casting them together in the first place.

Bette Davis stars as Jane, an aging, alcoholic former actress who holds her paraplegic former actress sister Blanche (Joan Crawford) captive in their home.

The film was centered around the very real, decades-long rivalry between Davis and Crawford, duelling actresses who often competed for the same parts.

In the lead up to the film's release, the pair took shots at one another in trade publications, and reports suggest they may have also antagonised one another on set.

This resulted in pure cinematic dynamite, as What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? was a massive success, receiving five Oscar nominations including Best Actress for Bette Davis.

In a deliciously twisted bout of irony, though, Joan Crawford still managed to walk away with an award on Oscar night despite not being nominated, by volunteering to collect the Best Actress Oscar for the absent winner, Anne Bancroft.

It all ties into the incredible mythology surrounding the film, and is a rare example where real-life disdain bled into the frames of the movie itself in a positive way.
