What We Know

Yes, you read that right: not only is Sigourney Weaver returning for Avatar 2 after dying in the first film, but she'll reportedly be playing a completely different character.

The actress confirmed this on The Jonathan Ross Show in 2015, simply stating "I don't play the same character". Whether things have changed or not in the years since, we don't know (the Avatar sequels didn't start shooting until 2017, leaving plenty of time for script revisions), but as it stands, Weaver won't be reprising her Avatar role of Dr. Grace Augustine.

Who She Might Be Playing

The obvious call here - since the Avatar series relies so heavily on special effects - is that Weaver is playing a brand-new character by way of CGI.

For obvious reasons, she can't play a character who looks like Grace (unless there's an in-film explanation for why her new character looks like her old, dead character), so the actress will probably look unrecognisable for each of the sequels she appears in.

Another option is that this whole "new character" line is a lie. We've seen plenty of actors and filmmakers lie about their projects in an effort to preserve secrets and surprises, so it wouldn't be a total shocker for Augustine to return in some form.
