What We Know

When Richard E. Grant found out who he would be playing in Star Wars: Episode IX, he claims that the "room went upside down" (via ComicBook.com). The big implication here is that the actor recognised his character's name (first, last, or both), which means that we might too.

No word has been given as to the size of his role, but if he had a reaction that big by simply learning his character's name, then it has to be a major part, right?

Who He Might Be Playing

Since he was first cast, fans have been speculating that Grant could be playing Grand Admiral Thrawn, the fan-favourite Star Wars villain. The actor soon denied this in a chat with The Radio Times, but since J.J. Abrams productions have a history of lying to the audience in an effort to keep secrets on lockdown, it's still fair to mark Thrawn as a candidate.

As a matter of fact, Thrawn has really been the only speculated character thus far. Grant's comment about the room flipping upside down would seem to indicate that he's playing an existing face, but he could just as easily be a brand-new character who sounded really cool when J.J. described the role to him.
