Jim Carrey was in major talks for the part of Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean, but had to regretfully decline due to scheduling conflicts with his upcoming Bruce Almighty.

Bruce went on to be a huge box office success, but considering that Pirates has spawned a five-movie franchise which by 2011 had made star Johnny Depp around $300 million in salaries and merchandising, it's clear what the smart choice was.

Depp not only made fat stacks of cash, but also scored a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his work on the first movie, and the film is credited with launching his career into the blockbuster stratosphere.

Would It Have Worked?: Very difficult to say. Depp brings such a unique quality to the part, inspired by Keith Richards of course, that Carrey's take probably would've been very different and much "zanier", which can irritate some people.
