The role of Randy 'The Ram' Robinson proved to be something of a career reviver for former professional boxer and equally talented thespian Mickey Rourke. On top of successfully shining a light on the pro wrestling industry and convincingly bringing a beaten down fictional veteran of the sport to life on screen, Rourke also bagged himself an Oscar nomination for Best Actor thanks to his compelling work.

But, there was a time when Nicolas Cage was actually the star destined to take to the top rope in the flick. However, the actor ultimately decided to give the project a miss, noting that one particular aspect of preparation for the role was a sticking point for him.

As Cage confessed to Access Hollywood around the time, “I resigned from the movie because I didn’t think I had enough time to achieve the look of the wrestler who was on steroids, which I would never do.”

With Rourke himself hinting at the use of steroids helping him to achieve his physique in the flick, it appears that Cage was simply not willing to cross that line in order to play 'The Ram'.
