Iconic James Bond villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld made his first cinematic appearance in 007's second movie, From Russia with Love, where he appeared briefly as the shadowy mastermind of SPECTRE known primarily as "Number 1."

However, we never see Blofeld's face in the film, with only his hands and the back of his head being shown on-screen. And in an attempt to preserve the mystery of what Blofeld looked like, the filmmakers had both Blofeld's physical actor, Anthony Dawson, and voice actor, Eric Pohlmann, go uncredited.

Instead, the end credits simply have a "?" next to Blofeld's name. Dawson and Pohlmann went uncredited again in the fourth Bond film, Thunderball, though this time Blofeld wasn't even mentioned in the credits at all.

Blofeld finally got his formal unveiling in the next movie, You Only Live Twice, where he was revealed to be played by the considerably higher-profile Donald Pleasence.

Evidently Bond producers wanted to maintain the mystery around Blofeld's appearance until they'd found a suitable A-lister to play the part.

Ironically, though, Blofeld has been played by a new actor in almost every subsequent film, with Pleasence being succeeded by the likes of Telly Savalas, Charles Gray, Max von Sydow, and most recently Christoph Waltz.
