10 Actors Who Will Ruin 2019 Films
4. Adam Sandler - Murder Mystery
It's easy to hear "Adam Sandler Netflix film" and take one step in the other direction, but Murder Mystery is a mildly intriguing project simply because it's not being written or directed by Sandler's usual cabal of hack-for-hire filmmakers.
Workaholics co-creator Kyle Newacheck takes on directing duties while James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, White House Down and...Independence Day: Resurgence) wrote the script, so there are at least competent-ish people steering the ship on this one.
As for the cast? Sandler is joined by Jennifer Aniston, Luke Evans, Terence Stamp, Gemma Arterton and David Walliams, making this the most intriguing Netflix Sandler comedy yet...for the little it's worth.
But it ultimately all comes down to the wild card that is Sandler himself, whose Happy Madison Productions is developing the film and hasn't released a well-received project since 2009's Funny People.
Sandler tends to team up with a revered art-house filmmaker once every few years, but otherwise he turns in the same disinterested performance every time, often touting a disguise and/or a forced, obnoxious voice in the bargain.
We can see he's already sporting the ridiculous moustache, but we'll have to wait for a trailer drop to see whether or not Sandler's got the grating voice to match.
On one hand this film has more talent behind it than any other Sandler Netflix film, but on the other, it's still a Sandler Netflix film likely governed by his lazy approach to both film performance and film production.
