10 Actors Who Won't Be Coming Back For Upcoming Sequels

7. Colin Farrell - Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald

Colin Farrell was one of the easy highlights of the first Fantastic Beasts film, playing Director of Magical Security for MACUSA, Percival Graves. However, it's revealed at the end of the movie that he is in fact the infamous dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) in disguise.

Farrell won't be returning for the sequel, clearly, with Depp transitioning into a full villain role for the next movie. Farrell said of his one-off role, "It was always written that that was it. Maybe [the real Graves is] buried in a shallow grave and he’s going to die of starvation 17 hours after the film ends." Lovely.

What It Means For The Film:

Farrell made for such a deliciously entertaining antagonist that it feels like a major trade-down that we're left with Depp for presumably the next four (!) sequels.

It'll be interesting to see if the movies end up pivoting away from Grindelwald eventually, especially with the iffy public perception of Depp right now, or somehow reintroduce Graves in a later film given the positive response to Farrell's performance.

What's clear, though, is that the second movie certainly would've benefited from just retaining Farrell and dispensing with the previous film's bait-and-switch entirely.
