The Project

Not sure if you've heard? But there's a small Disney film being reimagined by the name of The Little Mermaid. It's another of Disney's cherished titles and follows the trend of remakes that we've seen come out of the House of Mouse in the last few years.

The rumoured cast consists of Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina, Melissa McCarthy, and Javier Bardem joining confirmed stars Harry Style and Halle Bailey.

Why It's Make Or Break

The choice to cast McCarthy as Ursula isn't necessarily a bad one - hell, you can go as far to say it's a pretty spot on selection but the backlash facing her casting is that it's not exactly an inspired decision. She's proved can play comedic villain and her star-making role in Bridesmaids (in which she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress) flaunted that ability to cut her co-stars with comedic excellence.

That makes her a great fit to play the villainous sea witch. Many would've preferred Disney to use this role as a way of championing Drag-performers- Ursula herself being inspired partly by American drag queen, actor, Divine. In the age of Ru-Paul's Drag Race attracting audiences all over the world, this could've been Disney's chance to give Drag Queens the platform and big screen representation they are long overdue whilst also educating the next generation on the world of Drag.

This role could be a rod for Melissa McCarthy's back because if she doesn't nail it or offer something groundbreaking, people are going to point to her casting as the moment Disney dropped the ball.
