10 Alternate Scenes That Completely Change Famous Movies
3. The Female Victim - I Am Legend
I Am Legend is a pretty decent post-apocalyptic film that probably would have been forgotten underneath a deluge of other vampire/zombie films by now if it wasn't for the controversy surrounding its two endings.
The film ends with a pretty bog-standard finale in which Will Smith's character Robert Neville sacrifices himself to blow up all the vampiric "Darkseekers" and save the cure he had created.
However, the DVD release of the film came with an alternate ending. In this new version, the Darkseekers reveal that they actually only raided Neville's lab to save a female that he had been experimenting on and leave once he returns her to them.
It's an ending that is a lot closer to the book it's based on, exploring the same theme of Robert realising that he has become a legend to this new race, much like vampires were to his. It was also the film's original ending until test audiences reacted badly to it and it was changed.
This change has caused a lot of debate between fans of the film and both sides have a point. The theatrical ending robs the film of a lot of nuance in favour of a big Hollywood ending. However, as faithful as the original ending is to the book, it's also pretty anticlimactic.
